the Sorting Hat

Harry Being Sorted
Reasoning: The card representing the Fates and a higher plain that connects us all. Luck, twists in fortune, serendipity and destiny. The Sorting Hat sees from a broader perspective as well as intimately into your mind to see where you belong and where you will make an impact, all while giving one the feeling of being subject absolutely to the whims of fate...

In a traditional tarot deck, this is the Wheel of Fortune.

Notes
Coming up with the figure of Harry was relatively simple. I've drawn this card several times before, and they've mostly stayed fairly similar. The thing that makes this card stand out from others that I've done is that background. Craziness.
At first I had the background divided into quarters, one for each house. Those quarters would have a gigantic contrasting question mark, either radiating outwards, or all parallel or who knows what (see line drawing above). Somehow this was distracting me, with the question marks being as large as Harry himself. So I thought about a sort of tiled/checkered background instead, and gave it a shot. Drawing all of those little question marks (then coloring them! 2 layers of color each!) drove me absolutely batty, but it was a unique exercise. I've never done anything so patterned before (and hope to never again. Haha...)
I was afraid that it would be too loud and distracting, and that Harry & the Hat would get lost in all the changing colors. I tried to prevent this by making Harry darker & bolder colors, and keeping the tiles in the back slightly more muted. I hope it worked.
Incidentally, I'm pleased with the way Harry's robes fall from the stool. :B.

Please do not reproduce these cards on your website or print them for your own distribution and profit! This is my pet project, and I would like to keep it on this site only, please. You are, however, VERY welcome to link to this page! Thank you!
