Reasoning: The death card does not necessarily mean literal, physical death, but rather a transition and/or rebirth. It can mean being cut down, so that one can be brought back up to higher levels than ever before. Being a Deatheater is probably the lowest point in Snape's life, but he has renounced it and moved on to the respectable position of teacher, and even a spy against the forces of evil.
