DOLORES UMBRIDGE

'Professor' Dolores Umbridge is EVIL. I cannot STAND this woman. It is an impressive thing indeed that JK Rowling has accomplished, creating such a hateable character. There is nothing even slightly redeemable about Umbridge. I can manage to squeak out a bit of sympathy for other hateable characters, but not her. Short, squat, with mousy hair and a wide, leering mouth and bulging eyes, Umbridge reminds Harry forcibly of a large gloating toad. She is very smug, but tries to hide it under a sweet-as-sugar, fluffy cardigan and pink-bows exterior. She has decorated her office with doilies nauseating kitten-adorned plates, and it takes quite awhile for her true nature to reveal itself. But when it finally does, she is almost as scary as Voldemort himself (well, to me anyway...). Umbridge was placed by the ministry to undermine the student's abilities, as Fudge was paranoid that Dumbledore would use them to overthrow the ministry, specifically, himself. Eventually, Umbridge's reign spread from just Defense Against the Dark Arts to the entire school, forcing stifling decree upon decree, before finally claiming the Headmistress position herself. She used frightening methods during detention that clearly qualify as child abuse, and is openly hostile towards half-breeds (she attacks and expels Hagrid from the school for this reason). She has her stunners attack Professor McGonagall, and expels Fred, George and Harry from Quidditch. Umbridge took pains to win over Filch, granting him permission to use a horsewhip on misbehaving students, and put various teachers on probation. She is always identifiable even before visualization by her ultra-annoying soft cough "Hem, hem..." which she uses to interrupt people. Fortunately, she is tricked into the Forbidden Forest by Hermione, and is driven off by a herd of furious Centaurs. She is brought back to the hospital, but I doubt she will show her face at Hogwarts again.

'For disrupting my class with pointless interruptions,' said Professor Umbridge smoothly. 'I am here to teatch you using a Ministry-approved method that does not include inviting students to give their opinions on matters about which they understand very little. Your previous teachers in this subject may have allowed you more license, but as none of them - with the possible exception of Professor Quirrell, who did at least appear to have restricted himself to age-appropriate subects - would have passed a Ministry inspection...'
