NYMPHANDORA TONKS
Spunky,
but somewhat clumsy, Nymphandora Tonks is an auror and the youngest
member of the Order of the Phoenix. She shows disdain for her
given name, and prefers to be called just 'Tonks.' She offers
a unique asset to the order: Tonks is a metamorphmagus, meaning
she is able to change her appearance at will. She is constantly
changing hairstyles, and has even masqueraded as an elderly woman
while protecting Harry Potter. I wonder if she's capable
of looking like an existing person... that would be a great way
to infiltrate Deatheater ranks. I suppose this must not be possible,
or she'd be doing it... or she is, and we just haven't heard about
it.
Tonks was part of the Advance Guard to protect Harry, and was
wounded rather badly at the great battle against the Death Eaters
in the bowels of the Ministry of Magic. While she made a full
physical recovery, her emotions were not so quick to heal. The
death of her mother's cousin, Sirius Black, wounded her deeply,
and she spent much of Harry's 6th year guarding Hogwarts, looking
sad and despondent. They also seem to have affected her metamorph
abilities, and she usually appeared pale with mousy brown hair.
Harry discovered that Tonks's patronus changed form after the
battle at the ministry. At first he assumed it had taken the shape
of Padfoot, but it seems that assessment was incorrect: at the
end of the war at Hogwarts it was revealed that she had feelings
for Remus Lupin, despite his being both older than her and an
impoverished werewolf. I was personally SO delighted at this,
as Lupin totally deserves her (and she seems cool enough to deserve
him) and I hope they both survive the next book and find solace
and love with one another. |
"Opposite Harry, Tonks was entertaining Hermione and Ginny
by transforming her nose between mouthfuls. Screwing up her
eyes each time... her nose swelled to a beaklike protuberance
like Snape's, shrank to something resembling a button mushroom,
and then sprouted a great deal of hair from each nostril."
