Prof. POMONA SPROUT

A squat, rather dumpy witch with flyaway gray hair, Professor Pomona Sprout is the Herbology teacher and head of Hufflepuff House. Professor Sprout has very dirty fingernails, and there's always a lot of dirt on her patched hat and robes as well. She seems to have a pleasant disposition, and a great love of her field. Herbology is the study of magical plants, and Professor Sprout has a variety of interesting species, from pus-squirting bubotubors to screaming mandrakes to the deadly and undulating Devil's Snare. It's a good thing, too. Her Devil's Snare was used to help guard the Sorcerer's/ Philosopher's Stone, and her mandrakes were vital in reviving students (and Nearly-Headless-Nick) from their Basilisk-induced paralysis. Other than that, we don't know much about her.

"Professor Sprout took a large plant pot from under the table and plunged the Mandrake into it, burying him in dark, damp compost until only the tufted leaves were visible Professor Sprout dusted off her hands, gave them all the thumbs-up, and removed her own earmuffs. 'As our Mandrakes are only seedlings, their cries won't kill yet,' she said calmly as thought she'd just done nothing more exciting than water a begonia." CoS, pg 93
