Prof. SEVERUS SNAPE

Former head of Slytherin house and Potions Master. Snape was generally disliked and feared; unpleasant to nearly everyone except his precious Slytherins. He enjoyed tormenting Harry Potter and his friends (to a rather unhealthy degree...), and resided in the cold and creepy dungeons. His office had nasty floating things in jars all around, and he was the last professor you want to get detention with, as you'd likely spend many hours pickling more. Snape wanted the Defense Against the Dark Arts position at Hogwarts for years, but was always denied it by Dumbledore until Harry Potter's 6th year.
Snape is thin, with sallow skin and a hooked nose. His hair is shoulder-length, greasy and black, and goes along nicely with his swishing black robes. His voice is silky and dangerous, and he usually speaks softly. Snape rarely smiles (and even then, it's usually a nasty one), usually sneers and swoops around like a "great bat". His eyes are black, cold and fathomless, and "make you think of dark tunnels". They often glitter when he's being particularly malicious.
Snape was a school rival of James Potter and his friends, and out of these years grew enormous resentment on Snape's part. Snape knew more curses when he arrived at Hogwarts than most 7th year students, and hung out with Slytherins who almost all ended up Death Eaters. Snape knows how to carry a grudge; nearly 20 years later, he's still furious with Sirius Black, James Potter and Remus Lupin for publicly humiliating him, and for playing a 'trick' on him that nearly ended Snape's life.
Snape had a traumatic childhood and school life, and fashioned himself a secret name of 'The Half-Blood Prince'. Snape was always extremely skilled at potions, and even made up his own curses and potions improvements. Indeed, Severus Snape is no fool to be handled lightly.
Severus Snape has been playing tricky games of deception since the fall of Voldemort. When Voldemort lost his powers, Death Eater Snape came to Dumbledore pleading repentance and Dumbledore believed him and took him in. Snape was to spy on Voldemort for the Order of the Phoenix when it was reinstated after Voldemort came back. While Snape is overall an unlikable, mean, petty wizard, it seemed certain that he was on the side of good.
Doubt was cast upon this belief when Severus murdered the weakened Albus Dumbledore. Theories abound that it is very likely that Snape killed Dumbledore upon Dumbledore's orders or desires, and I too, feel that there is definitely more to this event and Snape's subsequent flight than meets the eye... but we will have to wait until the final book to know for sure.

"'Where's Snape?' .....'Maybe he's ill!' said Ron hopefully. 'Maybe he's left,' said Harry, 'because he missed out on the Defense Against Dark Arts job again!'
'Or he might have been sacked!' said Ron enthusiastically. 'I mean, everyone hates him--'
'Or maybe,' said a very cold voice right behind them, 'he's waiting to hear why you two didn't arrive on the school train.' Harry spun around. There, this black robes rippling in a cold breeze, stood Severus Snape. He was a thin man with sallow skin, a hooked nose, and greasy, shoulder-length black hair, and at this moment, he was smiling in a way that told Harry he and Ron were in very deep trouble."
