Rita
Skeeter is, for a while, a huge thorn in Harry Potter's side.
Once a 'journalist' for the Daily Prophet, she specializes in
writing tabloid spectacles with the aid of her Quick-Quotes Quill,
which basically twists and sensationalizes everything the interviewee
says (and even fabricating things they never said). With elaborately
set curls, jeweled glasses, penciled eyebrows and remarkably long
red nails on her mannish hands, everything about Rita is fake.
When Harry is selected a Triwizard Champion, Rita is all over
it, writing report after report about Harry and his past, while
all but ignoring the other competitors. Even when Dumbledore banishes
her from the Hogwarts premises, she manages to get dirt on practically
everyone. She eventually ends up slandering Hermione and Hagrid,
and jeopardizes Hagrid's career at Hogwarts. However, clever Hermione
prevailed, deducing that Rita is in fact an unregistered (and
therefore illegal) animagus, transforming into a small beetle.
It is in this form that she found out so many secrets.
Rita was blackmailed into silence and resignation for awhile,
until Hermione asked (or told, rather) her to conduct an interview
with Harry Potter to publish in the Quibbler magazine, about the
return of Lord Voldemort, as the Daily Prophet wouldn't print
it.
