Prof. QUIRRELL
Young,
nervous, and stuttering, Professor Quirrell was the Defense Against
the Dark Arts teacher during Harry's 1st year. He appeared constantly
spooked, and it seemed he was bullied a great deal by Professor
Snape (although we found out eventually what that was all about...).
Looking ludicrous in a large purple turban that smelled funny
(supposedly a gift from an African prince for banishing a zombie....),
Quirrell seemed hardly the type to go about conquering evil. And
indeed, unfortunately, that was the case.
You don't hear much about Quirrell (we don't even know his first
name), but I feel rather sorry for the guy. Hagrid says Quirrell
had a brilliant mind, but went out to gain hands-on experience
and returned quite a different man. It turns out he met up with
Voldemort in a forest somewhere, and despite that brilliant mind,
fell victim to the persuasive powers and brainwashing of the weakened
dark lord; he even gave Voldemort part of his physical body, hence
the concealing, odiferous turban. And from that point on, his
life was no longer his own.
Quirrell was abandoned by Voldemort and thus killed in the confrontation
with Harry Potter, and we never heard much about him after that.
I hope he was given proper respects at his funeral, because he
never managed to do much harm, and I feel he was a victim more
than an accomplice of Voldemort's.

"His
turban, he told them, had been given to him by an African prince
as a thank-you for getting rid of a troublesome zombie, but
they weren't sure they believed this story. For one thing, when
Seamus Finnigan asked eagerly to hear how Quirrell had fought
off the zombie, Quirrell went pink and started talking about
the weather; for another, they had noticed that a funny smell
hung around the turban, and the Weasley twins insisted that
it was stuffed full of garlic as well, so that Quirrell was
protected wherever he went. ."
