PETER PETTIGREW
Short,
balding and plump (although he's been losing weight recently...),
Peter Pettigrew is the current, somewhat reluctant, right-hand
man of Lord Voldemort (though curiously absent during the ordeals
taking place during book 5...hmm...) . Cowering and spineless,
Peter turned to the dark side years ago for fear of his life.
His is quite a sad story, indeed.
Once a Marauder, Peter was always the weaker student and personality
of the four friends. He needed a great deal of assistance to become
an animagus like James and Sirius, though he eventually learned
to change into a rat, and went by the nickname of Wormtail. When
the Potters went into hiding, Sirius convinced Peter to become
their secret-keeper, thereby holding their lives in his hands
(Peter was less likely to be suspect, as he was so weak). Alas,
Peter turned traitor and handed over the Potters to Voldemort.
When Sirius came after him, Peter blasted an entire street of
muggles and faked his own death, framing the destruction on Sirius.
He went incognito as the Weasley's pet rat, Scabbers, but eventually
was discovered and went running back to Voldemort.
It is Peter who killed Cedric Diggory, and who performed the ritual
to bring Voldemort to full strength. However, he also owes Harry
Potter his life, and Dumbledore made mention that Voldemort is
not likely to want a servant in debt to Harry. Maybe, just maybe,
Peter may try to right his past wrongs and contribute something
vital to the battle against evil. I hope so; it's hard for me
to imagine living with oneself after the atrocities he's committed,
especially to those who were once his best friends.

"..he
scrambled around to Ron.
'Ron...haven't I been a good friend...a good pet? You won't
let them kill me, Ron, will you... you're on my side, aren't
you?'
But Ron was staring at Pettigrew with the utmost revulsion.
'I let you sleep in my bed!' he said.
