Sir NICHOLAS de MIMSY-PORPINGTON
Sir
Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington is the noble and kindhearted, yet
somewhat melancholy ghost of Gryffindor House. He wears tights
and a ruff (hence the Shakespearean-image of him I envision...),
which, aside being fashionable, helps keep his mostly-severed
head from flopping to-and-fro; hence his less-than-appreciated
nickname, "Nearly-Headless Nick."
Sir Nicholas is a sad soul. His unfortunate death, some 500 years
ago, is unpleasant enough (whacked in the neck approximately 45
times with a blunt ax), and his unhappiness seems to continue
to some extent in his post-life state. His lack of proper decapitation
prevents him from joining the illustrious Headless Hunt, and he
is obviously quite sore about the rejection. However, he is a
pleasant individual, and gets Harry Potter out of a few scrapes
here and there, and even invited Harry, Ron and Hermione to his
500th Deathday Party. Nick provides our best access to the inner
working of the ghost community.
After the disappearance of Sirius behind the veil, Harry asked
Nick about the technicalities involved in becoming a ghost. Resignedly,
Nick explained that the chances of Sirius returning as a ghost
were slim, as one has to give up the right to the afterlife to
wander as a ghost, and that Nick himself made that decision out
of fear of death. It was a very sobering moment, and I'll need
to re-read it in order to catch exactly all that he said.
I hope we see more of Nick in future books. I wonder why he was
executed, and I would like to see him display some more of that
characteristic Gryffindor bravery, perhaps in the war against
Voldemort; it would be interesting to see what powers ghosts possess. |
"...'a matter of no importance.... It's not as though I
really wanted to join... Thought I'd apply, but apparently I
'don't fulfill requirements'--....But you would think, wouldn't
you,' he erupted suddenly, pulling the letter back out of his
pocket, 'that getting hit forty-five times in the neck with
a blunt axe would qualify you to join the Headless Hunt?'"
