MOANING MYRTLE
Introduced
during the Chamber of Secrets fiasco during Harry Potter's
2nd year at Hogwarts, "Moaning Myrtle" is the only known
name of this gloomy girl ghost. With thick glasses, limp hair
and a perpetually morose expression, she haunts the toilet where
she was killed over 50 years ago. Myrtle started out as merely
an annoyance, especially when Harry, Hermione and Ron were using
her restroom to mix the Polyjuice potion; but she later turned
out to be a vital part of solving the mystery of the Chamber of
Secrets, for it was the Chamber's mythical beast (a basilisk)
which killed her when Tom Riddle opened it for the first time.
Myrtle has perhaps the lowest self-esteem out of any other HP
character. Indeed, the only thing she prides herself on is haunting
Olive Hornby, the peer who tormented Myrtle the most during life,
until the Ministry of Magic made her go back to her toilet. Myrtle
seems to have taken quite a liking to Harry. She helped him during
his 2nd task of the Triwizard Tournament, and even offers to share
her toilet with him if she should prematurely perish. Glum as
she usually is, Myrtle does know how to have some
fun, as demonstrated by her habit of spying on the prefects in
their lush bathroom. ;)

"'Oh, yes,
very easy to forget Myrtle's dead,' said Myrtle, gulping, looking
at him out of swollen eyes. 'Nobody missed me, even when I was
alive. Took them hours and hours to find my body - I know, I
was sitting there waiting for them....'"
