ALASTOR 'MAD EYE' MOODY
Unusual
and disturbing-looking, with grizzled gray hair, a mutilated nose,
and a remarkable quantity of scars, Alastor's nickname is earned
by his magical eye; bright blue and constantly rolling about.
Moody has the eerie ability to see through solid objects, as well
as invisibility cloaks. Moody brought more Deatheaters and dark
wizards to justice than anyone else, but that achievement came
at a cost; his sense of security and trust of others. Indeed,
he is always expecting to be assaulted, only drinks from his own
hip flask, and owns numerous deceit-detecting devices and attack
dustbins. :)
Mad Eye was supposed to come out of retirement at the request
of his old friend, Albus Dumbledore, to fill in as Harry's fourth
Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Unfortunately, the real
Moody never made it to Hogwarts; he was kidnapped, imprisoned
in his own trunk and impersonated by Barty Crouch Jr. Crouch managed
to fool everyone with polyjuice potion, and used his position
of power to bring Harry to Voldemort. Crouch was eventually apprehended
and given the Dementor's Kiss, and Moody was returned home, even
more paranoid than he began. I was shocked and saddened when I
found out it wasn't really Moody; I'd grown quite fond of him
in a weird sort of way. He's easily one of my favorite characters.
Fortunately, we got to meet the real Moody during Harry's 5th
year. Mad-Eye has taken up his post as a major member of the Order
of the Phoenix, keeping an eye (harr-yuk...) on security especially.
He wrangled up an intricate plan to transport Harry to Hogwarts,
which eventually ended up being shortened, as it would have taken
them all summer to get there had they followed it. Gotta love
Moody.

"Moody
gave a harsh laugh, and his magical eye swivelled around so
fast it made Harry feel queasy to watch it.
'So... got any ideas how you're going to get past your dragon
yet?' said Moody.
'No,' said Harry.
'Well, I'm not going to tell you,' said Moody gruffly. 'I don't
show favoritism, me. I'm just going to give you some good, general
advice. And the first bit is- play to your strengths.'
'I haven't got any,' said Harry, before he could stop himself.
'Excuse me,' growled Moody, 'you've got strengths if I say you've
got them.'"
