Prof. MINERVA McGONAGALL

Professor McGonagall is a tall, thin, and rather stern-looking witch with black hair worn in a tight bun, and square-rimmed spectacles. She is frequently seen wearing tartan articles of clothing, and has an incredible knack for flaring her nostrils and thinning her lips when angered. She is extremely clever, being the professor of transfiguration (a tricky subject) and one of the only seven registered animagi this century (she transforms into a tabby cat with discernible square markings around the eyes...). While she is quite strict, McGonagall is not unkind and is also completely fair, even when it pains her. She is head of Gryffindor house, and deputy headmistress of Hogwarts; it is she who alerts and orients the first year students and oversees the Sorting Ceremony and Quidditch commentary. She also took over when Dumbledore was temporarily suspended during the Chamber of Secrets fiasco, and authorized Hermione's use of the time-turner during her 3rd year. Professor McGonagall projects an image of strength, authority and stability, and obviously cares deeply for the students. She joins them in their excitement over Quidditch (it was she who allowed, no, made Harry join the team his first year, instead of punishing him, and provided him with a broom), and weeps at the paralyzed students (she let Ron and Harry visit specially!) and the death of Cedric. She was also there when Dumbledore left Harry with the Dursleys the night James and Lily were killed. Harry is somewhat surprised at the concern she shows him whenever he brushes death (which he so often does...), but I don't find it surprising at all. She was injured severely, taking several stunning spells to the chest during Harry's fifth year, when the ministry was overrunning the school. Though she's getting along in years, she's still tough as nails, and is making a recovery, though she currently makes use of a cane. She actively works for the Order of the Phoenix.

'Please, Professor, we've just had our first Divination class, and we were reading the tea leaves and-' 'Ah, of course,' said Professor McGonagall, suddenly frowning. 'There is no need to say any more, Miss Granger. Tell me, which of you will be dying this year?'" PA, pg 84
