Madam HOOCH

A somewhat fierce (it seems to me) appearing woman, with short gray hair and yellow eyes like a hawk, Madam Hooch is the flying instructor and Quidditch referee of Hogwarts. What she does the rest of the year is a mystery...perhaps she only teaches part-time, or there are advanced flying lessons not detailed in the books. She doesn't seem mean by any accounts (in fact she is fairly nice to Neville when he broke his wrist during his first flying lesson), but is perhaps strict, no-nonsense, and passionate about Quidditch. Other than that, there isn't much to say about her at this point...maybe her character will slip into oblivion as far as the books are concerned, only popping up at Quidditch tournaments. Or perhaps Madam Hooch will take a larger role. Who knows? I didn't have a super clear image of her in my head until saw her casting and costuming in the first movie (played by Zoe Wanamaker), and I thought, "Yes, perfect. Fierce, raptor-like, sports and flying enthused woman." As Zoe herself put it, "She's all eagle."

"Madam Hooch was bending over Neville, her face as white as his. 'Broken wrist,' Harry heard her mutter. 'Come on, boy- it's all right, up you get.' She turned to the rest of the class. 'None of you is to move while I take this boy t the hospital wing! You leave those brooms where they are or you'll be out of Hogwarts before you can say 'Quidditch.' Come on, dear.' Neville....hobbled off with Madam Hooch, who had her arm around him. " SS, pg 110
