 Perhaps the most mysterious of the Hogwarts house ghosts (except maybe the origin of the Bloody Baron's bloodstains....), the Grey Lady is the patron ghost of Ravenclaw. We have yet to speak to her in the books, although she did pass Harry in the hallway once. She was described only as "the ghost of a tall witch" gliding past. This leaves her, so far, very open to artistic and imaginative interpretation, and this is simply my own. Maybe this picture will change if she becomes a more developed character. The image I get of her is mostly derived from the name, "grey", which makes me think of sadness or gloominess (also, as J.K. Rowling has said that it is typically unhappy people who become ghosts). Also a bit of history I heard that there is an actual ghost called the Grey Lady who haunts some castle in Britain. Possibly the ghost of Lady Jane Grey, who was executed at the Tower of London. A visitor also sent me an email about a Grey Lady who haunts a castle in Scotland. Who knows?
Until JK describes her in more detail, I see her as young and lovely, with an intelligent but sad air, and from about the Renaissance era (I have no idea why the Renaissance. I just do. :) ).
