FIRENZE
Harry
Potter first meets Firenze in the Forbidden Forest, when the centaur
saves Harry from Voldemort. Young and handsome, white-blonde and
palomino with pale blue eyes, Firenze is also very wise, and rather
unconventional for a centaur: he has accepted banishment from
his herd (and barely escaped death at their hooves) for allying
with Dumbledore against Voldemort and by teaching centaur divination
to the students at Hogwarts.
Firenze offers us our clearest view of centaur life and values,
as most centaurs stay separate from wizards, whom they regard
rather disdainfully. He speaks in very clear, concise language,
and is completely honest about everything; he explains to the
students about his banishment, and when teaching them the centaur
way of reading the stars stresses that nothing is certain in the
world; not even the centaur's knowledge (most of the students
have a difficult time comprehending what he is trying to teach
them; centaur philosophy is very different from wizard philosophy).
I feel incredibly bad about Firenze's predicament. I don't know
what will happen to him when/if Trelawny returns to her divination
post... maybe they'll keep him on for special 'centaur divination'
classes, or maybe there are other centaurs out there like him,
who align themselves against evil rather than always staying 'neutral
observers', that Dumbledore can hook him up with. |

"Firenze
suddenly reared on to his hind legs in anger, so that Harry
had to grab his shoulders to stay on.
'Do you not see that unicorn?' Firenze bellowed at Bane. 'Do
you not understand why it was killed? Or have the planets not
let you in on that secret? I set myself against what is lurking
in this forest, Bane, yes, with humans alongside me if I must.'"
