ARGUS FILCH and Mrs. NORRIS
A
cranky, bulbous-nosed, pouchy-faced man who smells faintly of
fried fish, Argus Filch is the caretaker of Hogwarts School. In
addition to cleaning and general upkeep, his duties include updating
the list of restricted items and prowling around Hogwarts to catch
and punish any wrongdoers. He's aided by Mrs. Norris, his beloved
scrawny, dust-colored cat with whom he seems to share a psychic
connection. Filch keeps files on every student he's ever punished,
and longs for the good old days when students were hung from their
toes for misbehaving. Only once so far has he been allowed to
implement his punishment devices of choice, when Delores Umbridge
took over the school during Harry's 5th year. Filch prowled the
halls with a whip in hand, but never got an opportunity to beat
anyone with it. Poor Filch.
He is skilled at painting restoration (it is he who 'expertly
restored' the Fat Lady of Gryffindor tower), and passionate about
his work and cat. He wages perpetual war against Peeves the Poltergeist,
who delights in nothing more than causing trouble and infuriating
Filch.
Filch hates the students, possibly even worse than Professor Snape
(at least Snape has his favorites...Filch hates 'em all). A good
explanation for this hatred is the fact that Argus is a squib:
born to a magical family, but lacking magical powers himself.
J.K. Rowling has stated in interviews that important things happened
during the 2nd book, and that someone will learn magic later in
life. I'm hypothesizing (and hoping) that this person will be
Argus Filch.
While not evil (it would probably not be beneficiary
for a squib to support Voldemort!), Filch and Mrs. Norris certainly
add to the dangers and difficulties Harry and his friends encounter
at Hogwarts. |
"'What
are you doing?' Filch snarled suspiciously.
'Nothing,' said Harry truthfully.
'Nothing!' spat Filch, his jowls quivering unpleasantly. 'A
likely story! Sneaking around on your own - why aren't you in
Hogsmeade buying Stink Pellets and Belch Powder and Whizzing
Worms like the rest of your nasty little friends?'
Harry shrugged.
'Well, get back to your common room where you belong!' snapped
Filch, and he stood glaring until Harry had passed out of sight."
