FAWKES the PHOENIX
Fawkes
is the phoenix companion of Albus Dumbledore. A beautiful, swan-sized
scarlet and golden bird with black eyes and a long tail, Fawkes
has come to the aid of the Dumbledore and Harry Potter on several
occasions. Phoenixes are capable of carrying extremely heavy loads,
which came in handy when Fawkes transported Harry, Ron, Ginny
and Lockhart out of the Chamber of Secrets. Their tears have powerful
healing properties, and Harry has twice been saved by Fawkes in
this manner. The phoenix song is also extremely powerful, eerie
and unearthly, inducing strong emotions in those who hear it...
hope and strength to the pure-hearted, terror into the hearts
of the evil. Fawkes sang a soul-wrenching lament at the death
of Albus Dumbledore, which Harry felt captured the feeling of
mourning and pain.
Harry first met Fawkes on a Burning Day, when Fawkes was aged
and about to die. They die in a burst of flames, and a tiny ugly
baby phoenix is reborn from the ashes. This happens naturally
and also if the phoenix is killed in an accident, such as when
Fawkes purposely swallowed a killing curse intended for Dumbledore.
Fawkes is also the shape of Dumbledore's patronus, and he can
deliver messages and warnings in a flash of flame, leaving only
a feather behind. Fawkes's feathers are powerfully magical, and
are in the cores of both Harry and Voldemort's wands. He appears
immune to the deadly powers of the basilisk, and Fawkes gouges
out the beasts's eyes in order to protect Harry from it's lethal
gaze.
An extremely rare and faithful beast, Fawkes is bonded only to
Albus Dumbledore, and leaves Hogwarts forever after Albus's death.

"A
second later, the bird was flying straight at Harry.... as it
folded its great wings, Harry looked up and saw it had a long,
sharp golden beak and a beady black eye.
The bird stopped singing. It sat still and warm next to Harry's
cheek, gazing steadily at Riddle.
' That's a phoenix...' said Riddle, staring shrewdly aback at
it.
' Fakwes?' Harry breathed, and he felt the bird's golden claw
squeeze his shoulder gently."
