The DURSLEYS

The Dursley family are about as Muggleish as it is possible to be. Harry Potter's last surviving relatives (his mother was Aunt Petunia's sister), the Dursley's took Harry in as an infant, though neither side has been very happy about it. Harry makes the Dursley's miserable by simply existing, and being magical. The Dursleys' thus do everything in their power to make Harry miserable, and try to 'squash the magic' out of him. Needless to say, while they often succeed in making him miserable, they don't manage to de-magic him. Vernon Dursley is a stocky man with no neck and a large, dark mustache. He disapproves of imagination and magic, and works in a drill company yelling at people. The world of magic scares and confuses him, and he does is best to avoid it, and force the magic out of Harry, usually by denying him food and outside contact, or by yelling at him whilst spraying spit and turning purple. Dudley Dursley is spoiled rotten by his doting parents and aunt Marge. They spend too much money on him, give him too many presents, feed him too much, and don't discipline him at all. Dudley grew from an extremely fat and lazy boy into a large and intimidating teenager with a talent for boxing and picking on people. Dudley is a sad case, as his extreme unappealingness is wholly the result of his upbringing. His school and social problems are excused away by his parents, as is his weight. Dudley once bullied Harry terribly, but is now frightened of Harry and everyone magical after he spent time in a private hospital getting a magical pig tail removed, and had a run-in with dementors on Privet Drive. Petunia Dursley, sister of Lily Potter, is horse-faced, thin and blonde, and enjoys gossiping and coddling Dudley. She expresses great bitterness at her sister, and has presumably married Vernon to escape all things magical in her bloodline. Unfortunately for her, she agreed to take in Harry Potter as an infant, a pact she made with Dumbledore for reasons we don't entirely understand yet... I suppose she might have taken baby Harry out of the goodness of her heart, however begrudgingly, because to not do so would spell death for her nephew. But maybe there was more to it than that. I hope we find out in later books, because Petunia has turned out to be more interesting than previously thought.
