Prof. ALBUS DUMBLEDORE
Tall
and thin with long silvery hair and beard, half moon glasses and
a rather long and crooked nose, Dumbledore was the wise headmaster
of Hogwarts, and leader of the Order of the Phoenix. Immeasurably
talented and powerful, he was said to be the only wizard feared
by Lord Voldemort himself. He was a somewhat controversial headmaster,
revered by most, but accused of being "the worst thing
to happen to Hogwarts" by the extremist Death Eater/
pureblood wing. Dumbledore was somewhat eccentric, with a fondness
for wool socks and lemon drops, and his twinkling blue eyes lead
one to believe he knows much more than he lets on. He could see
through Invisibility Cloaks, had a Phoenix and a Pensieve, and
Harry found his office one of the most interesting places in Hogwarts.
Albus Dumbledore could be stern and serious, but for the most
part he is extremely kindly and even silly at times. He believed
in giving second chances; he employed Hagrid as gamekeeper after
his wrongful expulsion and allowed Lupin to both attend and later
teach at Hogwarts, despite his being a werewolf. He was wise enough
to know that things are not always as they seem; that Sirius Black
and Buckbeak were both innocent, and he discreetly facilitated
their escape. He employed Dobby the house elf, even paying him
and giving vacation time, which is unheard of in the Wizarding
world.
Towards the end of Harry's 5th year, and throughout nearly all
of Harry's 6th year at Hogwarts, it became disturbingly clear
that Dumbledore was getting older, more tired - and perhaps most
alarmingly - weaker. He and Harry spent the year exploring the
mystery of Voldemort's immortality in hopes of learning how to
defeat him, and their bond grew closer than ever. This led them
at last to a cave to retrieve a tool to destroy Voldemort... but
horrible magic sapped most of Dumbledore's remaining strength,
forcing Harry to take the role of protector. It was possibly the
most disturbing scene I've ever read, ever.
When Dumbledore and Harry returned to Hogwarts, a trap had been
set. Dumbledore sacrificed his own chance of escape to protect
Harry one last time, which had the unfortunate consequence of
forcing Harry to see all that happened next:
After urging Draco to make the right choice and come away from
Voldemort, Albus Dumbledore was murdered by Severus Snape. It
appeared the ultimate betrayal - Dumbledore, who had taken in
Severus after the fall of Voldemort, believing that Snape was
sincere in his repentance. Theories abound that it is very likely
that Snape killed Dumbledore upon Dumbledore's orders or desires,
and I too, feel that there is definitely more to this event and
Snape's subsequent flight than meets the eye... but we will have
to wait until the final book to know for sure.
Albus Dumbledore was laid to rest on the grounds of his beloved
Hogwarts in a snowy white tomb. Countless wizards and creatures
attended his service. The loss of the greatest wizard of modern
times, both in power and in heart, was shattering to everyone
in Harry's world... and to all of us who read it.

"'Is
that where-?' whispered Professor McGonagall.
'Yes,' said Dumbledore. 'He'll have that
scar forever.'
'Couldn't you do something about it, Dumbledore?'
'Even if I could, I wouldn't. Scars can come in handy. I have
one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London
Underground.'"
