DOBBY
Dobby
the house elf was a source of great exasperation to Harry Potter
in the beginning of his 2nd year at Hogwarts. Small and thin,
with huge bat-ears and green 'tennis ball' eyes and a pencil-like
nose, Dobby begged Harry not to return to school, as it would
be too dangerous. When pleading failed, Dobby resorted to using
deflective magic of his own to discourage Harry, even though he
had to punish himself 'most grieviously' afterwards.
Bound by house-elf code to serve one wizarding family throughout
the generations, Dobby was unlucky enough to be born to the abusive
Malfoy family. Constantly threatened and forced to injure himself,
Dobby was resigned to his fate, but still did his best to thwart
the evil intentions of his master, Lucius Malfoy.
To repay Dobby for his well-intentioned efforts, Harry tricked
Lucius into handing Dobby a sock, thereby releasing him from bondage.
Now a free elf, Dobby dresses how he pleases and gets paid for
working at Hogwarts. He tries to help fellow house-elf, Winky,
accept this freedom as well, and seems unconcerned with the rest
of the disapproving house-elf population at Hogwarts. While freedom
has taken some getting used to, and Dobby occasionally struggles
with badmouthing his former masters, he is truly a happier being.
Dobby pops up in Harry's life every now and then, as he is the
only elf willing to clean Gryffindor Tower (due to Hermione's
elf-liberating efforts). Most recently he aided Dumbledore's Army
in finding a suitable place to practice: The Room of Requirement. |
"'...Dobby
wants to save Harry Potter's life! Better sent home, grievously
injured, than remain here sir! Dobby only wanted Harry Potter
hurt enough to be sent home!'
'Oh, is that all?' said Harry angrily. 'I don't suppose you're
going to tell me why you wanted me sent home in pieces?'
