Prof. BINNS
The
only ghost teacher at Hogwarts, Professor Binns is about as exciting
as the subject he teaches: History of Magic. Indeed, the most
exciting thing about his class is when he 'enters the room through
the blackboard.'
Binns is extremely old, and most likely died of natural causes.
Rumor has it he fell asleep, died, and went on to teach the next
day without even realizing he was dead. What a way to go...
He has a deep passion for solid, provable fact, but can't seem
to instill the same passion in his students. The one time anyone
paid attention in his class was during the Chamber of Secrets
fiasco. Binns tolerated their questioning for a bit (probably
because he was so shocked they were awake), but grew frustrated
explaining what he deemed a frivolous, unprovable myth. He seems
to have trouble remembering names of the students, and one has
to wonder what made him turn to teaching in the first place.

'I deal with facts, Miss Granger, not myths and legends.' He
cleared his throat with a small nose like chalk snapping and
continued, 'In September of that year, a subcommittee of Sardinian
sorcerers-'"
